  • Candidate Questionnaire:

    1. What inspired you to run for the Pasadena independent School District Board of Trustees or the San Jacinto Board of Trustees?
I am running for PISD School Board because as an Educator, I am aware of students, teachers and support worker needs.  And I am passionate about seeing students fulfill their potential in their academics and personal abilities.  I am running to do what is right for students.  Presently, there is only one Board member with an education background.  If elected, I will be the second Board Member with an education background and the only current teacher on the PISD School Board.

    2. What qualifications, experience, and leadership skills prepare you for this role, including crisis response, crime prevention, financial literacy, and public communication?
I am an educator with 24 years of experience in the classroom.  I taught for 14 years at Pasadena.
In addition to being a teacher, I have a business background in order to provide a better oversight of the spending of taxpayers’ money conservatively.  PISD has a budget deficit of $33M over the last 3 years.  That will result in cuts in teaching positions by attrition.  This will affect students’ learning.

    3. What do you see as the biggest challenges facing our school district / college?  How would you address them?
With the budget deficit of $33M over 3 years, we need to make better decisions for the long-term needs of the whole district.  And if there is a voucher system imposed, public education will suffer from less funding.
To address these financial issues, we must consider redistricting and following recommendations by researchers to make policies that are best for our students and staff.

    4. What do you see as the biggest strengths and successes of our school district/college?
Our teachers, administrators and support workers are hardworking and caring.  Our students are diverse and hardworking as well.

    5. What is your vision for the school district/college in the next three to five years?
My vision is for students to learn to their greatest potential.

    6. What are your top priorities for the first 6 months, and what policies or initiatives will you continue or change?
I would like to see why there has been a budget deficit in the last 3 years and what we can do about it in order to provide more resources to our teachers and students.

    7. Access to talent and workforce is the number one challenge facing our businesses and industries.  What would you do to ensure that employers' needs are met, and students are graduating with the skills necessary to succeed?
I will work with surrounding employers and organizations to have their support in providing internships and scholarships to assist our students continuing their education and training after high school.

    8. Supporting local businesses is a chamber priority.  What would you do to support local businesses as a Board Trustee?
When students’ quality of education increases and they have more opportunities for college education and training, families are more likely to move into the district.  That will increase support in local businesses like in Pearland ISD and Friendswood ISD.

    9. Collaboration among the chamber, city, school district, and college has been pivotal in achieving success both in educational programs and during times of natural disaster when coordinated efforts are necessary for recovery.  What suggestions or ideas do you have for continued collaboration and enhanced partnerships?
Collaboration is key.  We need to work together to help our students succeed.  Thus, feedback is vital from community, parents, educators, and businesses.   Representation is also vital.  Citizens should be able to elect their board members when they pay the largest portion of their property tax to PISD.  That is why the Board should have allowed the citizens to vote for the 5th position to fill the board vacancy.
